Firstly, I would like to say that this place has a wonderful atmosphere and a backstory that will tug on your heart strings. The boutique inside is adorable and all the stylists and other employees are insanely friendly! I like to start with the positive first. 2 years ago, a stylist in Fredericksburg I had used for the past few years went into retirement. She had been perming and cutting my hair amazingly. Upon her retirement, I decided to no longer get perms and got the rest of my perm cut almost completely out of my hair here at Chany’s with a new stylist. The salon was right by my house, this was a big selling point for me. My goal was to start regrowing my hair to its original length of about 18-20” overall. My hair was probably about 8-10” inches long when I first started coming here. I got my hair cut about four times here, but did not realize until my very last haircut 2 months ago that my stylist did not really accomplish what I had wanted. While my hair was still short originally post perm removal after my first cut here and I was getting regular trims, I figured my hair looked a little messed up because I was growing it out, and I had a lot of permed hair to cut. Not up until my most recent cut did I realize that my stylist wasn’t really able to achieve what I had asked them to do, ever. Since now my hair had gotten longer, the cuts were much more noticeable and it became obvious that this wasn’t really what I was going for at all. Fine hair like mine can be difficult to style, and I am completely aware of that, I think I’m just realizing that maybe I need to spend more money on my hair in order to get the care that it needs since it is a rarer type. I always left the salon feeling good about my hair, but then once I would get home and try to style it for about the next week or two I would start to realize that I did not really get what I had asked for. Surprisingly, my wife had been going to the same hairstylist and we recently realized that we have VERY similar haircuts, although we are asking for completely different things to be done to our hair. 2 months post my last haircut, I’ve come to hate it more day by day 😩 My hair growth journey will now be a bit longer, and it will take me a lot longer to grow out my layers. Since my hair is very fine, it is important that the layers don’t run too far down the sides and back of my hair as this causes a thinning look. I usually just ask for a trim and some light layering as my hair is VERY fine and is prone to lacking volume. I made my hairstylist aware of this from the start with regular reminders, and upon getting my last haircut was very specific as to what I wanted and felt unheard. My layers are all over the place, the right side of my hair is much shorter than the left side of my hair, it looks like theres a patch of hair missing on the bottom front left layer. It’s short in the front& long in the back 😭 I didn’t really realize any of this until about a month after I got my last haircut there and I just really wish I would’ve stopped gaslighting myself sooner. I think it’s so important to support small businesses and build community with people in as many ways as you can, and what better place to do that than in a hair salon. All in all hair always grows back though! I already struggled with self-esteem issues, though, so this has definitely been a character building experience. I saw a similar review from another person posted saying that if you can’t do the haircut that a person is asking for, kindly advise them to seek service elsewhere, and I am in the same boat. Overall, I wouldn’t TOTALLY discourage you from going here, its important to support small businesses& this place truly seems special, but maybe it’s time for some of the hairstylists to get a little refresher course, there’s no shame in admitting that your craft needs honing! ☺️ P.s. when someone say they’re trying to grow their hair out, recommending them to come in for a haircut every 4-6 weeks is not optimal. Note how much longer my hair looks once I’ve put the choppy layers up.
My family and I have been going to Chaneys for years now, and have never felt more at home in a salon. Everyone from the receptionist to the owner care for their clients as if they are family. They listen to what you want and make sure you understand the process of how they are going to get you where you need to be for your desired look… 10 out of 10 will always recommend.
Giving this place one star because it's required to leave a review. I see a lot of good reviews and that's the reason I trusted to go here for my hair to be done. That most definitely was NOT my experience, I wish it was. This is the first time I've had my hair cut and dyed in such a long time and was really looking forward to it. I even emphasized on the fact that I needed someone that knew exactly what they were doing when it comes to color when I made my appointment because my natural hair is so dark and it's not easy to lift to a lighter color. I made this known and I even brought in a photo of exactly what I wanted and well let's just say it was no where close. 😡 I do not get to do something like this much because of how hectic my everyday life is and like I said I was really looking forward to it. I have had my hair lightened quite a few times in my life and never have walked out of a salon feeling the way I did today. I just feel like when you are doing someone's hair and someone is paying you over $200 for you to do their hair, if you feel like you can't actually do what they are asking why even touch their hair? Why not have someone else do it? Maybe someone with more experience with coloring because clearly she did not know what she was doing. I sat with foils for maybe 30 mins and was never put under heat. Mind you like I said my natural hair is dark so you would just think that I would have at least had some type of dryer on my head while I sat. Once she was done blow drying my hair I actually thought it was a joke when she said I am sorry we couldn't get it as light as you wanted 🤯. I was speechless. I mean that is what I paid you for right?!? I paid you over $200 for you to basically do whatever YOU wanted to do with my hair because you damn sure did not do anything close to what I asked for. I will be calling in the morning for a refund and will NEVER step foot back inside of this place. If you want your hair lightened in anyway I would be advised. At least ask whoever is doing it if they are actually capable of doing what you want done because I think its a complete joke for any hair dresser to do that to someone that is paying you that much money. For that much the customer most definitely should get exactly what they ask for. I think her name was Kaitlyn. If you read this please if you feel like you can not do someone's hair the way they want or can't even get close to it let them know that so they can have someone else do it or so they can go somewhere else altogether because it was not fair for me to pay you $200 for something I didn't even ask for. You're messing with someone's confidence smh. You should know better!!! 🤨🙄 When I got home I inspected it better and...... I now have the thinnest little highlights that you can barely see and one big chunk of blonde in the back of my hair and is completely uneven. I am livid. I will remove this review the moment I am refunded!!!!!! PHOTOS: WHAT I ASKED FOR VS. WHAT THE STYLIST ACTUALLY DID!
